Ashburnham is uniquely located at the foothills to the knuckles mountain range, making it the ideal setting for a wide range of activities. Here’s a list of our favourite things to do both in and around Ashburnham Estate.
The house is perfectly located amidst stunning waterfalls. Take a short stroll around the property and discover our secret plunge & serenity pools, eventually leading to a larger cascade fall. These are swimmable most of the year round and completely safe for kids – great to cool off after a hot afternoon!
2. Bike Rides
Around Ashburnham there are plenty of fun bike rides to take part in. Explore the rolling hills and surrounding tea estates on two wheels for a real taste of Sri Lanka. Our favourite route is ‘The Great Downhiller’ – offering a leisurely ride down winding paths, and ending with a delicious packed lunch. Even better yet, we’ll come and pick you up at the bottom so you don’t have to ride back up!
Pulling up into the driveway at Ash, you might get the sense that you’re arriving at an old friend or relative’s house. Make yourselves at home and let the kids enjoy their freedom, surrounded by nature! Meander down the old estate steps and enjoy an afternoon of exploring in peace.
4. Walking & Hiking
Don’t be intimidated by the knuckles mountain range. There are lots of shorter, but just as beautiful hikes, which can be done at a leisurely pace with children, the views are no less stunning and you might even find yourself strolling amongst the clouds.
Cake o’clock anyone? Every day at Ash is a cake day, fresh scones, lemon drizzle & a good old sponge cake are just a few of our favourites! Our chef is also available for cooking classes, helping you learn to chop, cook & taste – Ashburnham style. Many of the spices and herbs can be found in our little veg patch – great for the kids to explore!
Breakfast is normally the highlight of the day… Try our “Sri Lankan style Eggs Benedict” for something a little different. As well as the traditional Sri Lankan dishes, we are keen to offer a wider range of family friendly food – all hearty and rejuvenating for active days.
6. Pool & Tennis courts
Did someone say slide? The kids (and adults) will be entertained for hours on our quaint little pool slide! If they do get bored, feel free to dust off our rackets and try your luck at a game of tennis – which haven’t changed a great deal over the past 30 years or so.
7. Tea Estate
Ashburnham is a working tea estate of some 100 acres and so, our pickers are in the fields almost every day. Our Tea estate manager for the last quarter of a century, Mr Das – will tell you everything there is to know and more about it all. After which you can enjoy our home-grown brew.
8. Look-out tower & views
Spectacular sunsets happen almost daily at Ashburnham, set yourself up with an early evening drink and watch the sun go down from our look-out tower. The 360 degree views propose a perfect spot for chilling out after a day of exploring.
We might be biased, but we think Ashburnham is the perfect place for families looking to have an active and adventurous trip – away from the usual crowds!
